Advent Calendar
Posted By linda on December 6, 2007
Every evening we have been doing an advent calendar. Our advent calendar looks like a little house. It has doors to open and put something in it. I got it from Target. Every night, we have been learning about the symbols of Christmas and their history. I wanted the children to know why and where the traditions of Christmas come from. I found an unit study program on the internet. I don’t follow the study program exactly. I change some of the activities. So far, the children are enjoying it.
Day one: Advent Calendar
Activity – Read Luke 2:19 and the origin of the advent calendar.
Day two: Christmas Cards
Activity – Read Luke 2:13-14 and the history of Christmas Cards. Send Christmas cards to friends and family.
Day three: St. Nicholas
Activity – Read Philippians 2:1-11 and the truth story of St. Nicholas. Be a secret Santa to someone and do something nice for that person.
Day four: Christmas Tree
Activity – Read Luke 2:52, 2 Peter 3:17-18 and the history of Christmas trees. We decorate Christmas Tree the day after Thanksgiving but if you would like decorating your tree on this day would be a great activity.
Day five: Bells
Activity – Read Psalm 100 and origins of the jingle bells. Make door hangs with jingle bells. We use flexible craft wire and strung jingle bells on it. Then made a loop on the top and hang it on a doorknob. So, now when anyone opens an door the bells ring.
This is the first five days. We will be continuing our advent calendar until Christmas. It is a fun and interesting way to learn about Christmas.
